Pray like Jesus (I).
Pray like Jesus (I).
Text: Matthew 6:9-13, John 17, Hebrews 5:7.
Memory Verse: “And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive” Matthew 21:22
Prayer is the most important conversation of your day. In prayer we talk to God about everything. Whatever it is,whatever comes your way, take it to God first, before you take it to anyone else. Many people wonder and sometimes ask this question; is it really important to spend time daily in prayer with God? Well, we previously learned that prayer is simply a two-way conversation that we have with God in order to grow. It is spending time talking, listening, asking and thanking Him. Prayer is vital to our growth as children of God.
Do you know that Jesus also spent a lot of time praying when He was here on earth? The Bible recorded that He often went away by Himself to pray. In the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, it is recorded that He prayed at least over two dozen times. Let us briefly look at how we can pray like Jesus and what Jesus prayed for.
According to our text in John 17 where we have the prayer of Jesus, Jesus prayed to God concerning everything. From verse 1-5, Jesus asked the Father to glorify Him (vs. 5); from verses 6-19 Jesus prayed for the disciples asking the Father to keep them in unity, to keep them from the evil one and to sanctify them (vs. 11, 15 and 17). Then in verses 20-26, Jesus prayed to the Father concerning everyone who will one day believe in Him through the gospel of the disciples.
Also in In Matthew 6:9-13, Jesus gave us a format to follow when we pray. Apart from the Lord’s Prayer; we also know that Jesus prayed all the time; He prayed about everything. What Jesus’s prayer tells us is that He depended on the Father for everything, so if we really want to pray like Jesus we must depend on the Father and completely trust in Him for everything. Prayer is the only way we can relate to God and be guided by Him. Jesus got very close to God through prayer; we can do the same if we want to get closer to God.
Pray: Lord, Help me to cultivate the habit of praying to you for everything and at all time.
