The Ten Commandments – 4th Commandment
Text: Exodus 20:7-11, Deuteronomy 5:11-15
Memory Verse: “8 Remember that the Sabbath Day belongs to me (CEV). ” Exodus 20: 8
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy Exodus 20:8-11: This is the fourth commandment and it talks about a particular day which you must keep holy, that day is called the Sabbath day. The Sabbath day for Christians is Sunday as it is the seventh day of the week. The word Sabbath comes from the Hebrew word Shabbath meaning rest. Before the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Sabbath day was God’s day of rest after He finished the creation (Genesis 2:2-3). Now the Sabbath day is in honour of the resurrection of Jesus Christ and it is a holy day ordained by God for us to rest from our daily work and worship Him. Jesus taught that the Sabbath day was made for our benefit (Mark 2:27); the purpose of the Sabbath is to give us a certain day of the week on which to direct our thoughts and actions towards God. It is not merely a day to rest from work; it is sacred day to be spent in worship and reverence of God as we renew our covenants with Him and feed our souls on the things of the Spirit.
