The Consequence Of A Dangerous Exchange

The Consequence Of A Dangerous Exchange

Genesis 25:31-34.

God has ordained a blessing for every man, regardless of background, circumstance, or birth. It is our responsibility to discover and guard against losing our priced possession of eternal life.

Our text enlightens us about Esau’s despicable act of selling his birthright for a meal based on an excuse- “for I am the point to die“. He didn’t consider the consequence of this dangerous exchange until the time of reckoning came- Genesis 27:34-37; Hebrew 12:16,17 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears (vs 16,17).

There are other examples in the Bible and in our contemporary times of those who forfeited God’s blessings of righteousness and holy living for the mundane things of this life. They soon forgot what sacrifice it took God to make the provision of the blessings they disdain- 2 Timothy 4:10; 2 Peter 2:20-22 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning (vs 20).

We must always seek to keep the treasured truths of God’s words delivered to us and walk thereby every day. It might seem logical or socially acceptable to enjoy the pleasures of today but we run a great risk of missing out on eternal fortunes if we neglect to consider and ultimately reject any contradiction to the way of life. The examples of Daniel in Babylon and Joseph in Egypt are worth emulating. They were offered such free and delightful bounties laced with the poison of sin. But they resisted, choosing the way of righteousness. Although riddled with present hardship, they were divinely rescued and eventually rewarded by God.
