Heroes of Faith: Joseph’s Journey (I)
Heroes of Faith: Joseph’s Journey (I)
Text: Genesis 37:4-36
Memory Verse: “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” Hebrews 11:6
Joseph the dreamer and the interpreter of dreams was one of the greatest heroes of the Old Testament and an extraordinary example of what can happen when a person surrenders his life in complete obedience to God. Joseph just like father Abraham had to go through a series of test and even after all the trials, his faith never wavered; he came out victorious and was recorded as a hero of faith.
Joseph had to go through difficult tests from when he was just a teenager till he became a youth. We will look at the tests and how his faith in God helped him to overcome.
Joseph the dreamer: Joseph was just seventeen years old when he started having dreams about his future. His father Jacob (later called Israel) loved him more than his brothers and made him a coat of many colours; this made his brothers hate him so much. When Joseph started having dreams of him ruling over everyone including his brothers and parents; his brothers hated him the more Genesis 37:3-11. One day, his father sent him to check up on his brothers in the field where they were taking care of their father’s cattle. When they (his brothers) saw him coming; they planned to kill him but Reuben suggested that they throw him in a pit. After this Reuben left for a while; his brother Judah suggested that they sell him to some Midianites merchants that were passing by. They sold him for 20 pieces of silver; later the Midianites sold him in Egypt to Potiphar an officer of Pharaoh. Despite the betrayal from his brothers, Joseph never stopped believing that God was in control of whatever was happening to him.
Prayer: God help me to keep believing you and all that you have said about me not minding the happenings around me. Amen
