Circumcision

Circumcision

Genesis 17:10, 11

Circumcision is common knowledge to everyone. It is a medical procedure for the removal of the male foreskin. The first circumcision documented was with Abraham as a covenant of holiness between him and God and this ordinance later became what God demanded from the lineage of Abraham as a remembrance. The foreskin harbors dirt and may become a disease in time, which could be transferred.

God’s word comes in different ways, sometimes with physical comparisons of what we can see, other times, He uses parables to speak to us like He told Abraham to look up and down and count whatever he sees. Jesus spoke with a lot of parables to describe spirituality for a proper understanding.

From the text, God called Abraham out of his country and family, out of his old life and old companions. The instruction was to “walk before God and be perfect”.

Colossians 2:11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ.

What is a circumcision made without hands?

The circumcision “made without hands” is an operation of God. This pertains to our spiritual

circumcision in Christ. In short, the Father surgically removed our sins when Christ was cut off at the Cross. An understanding of this truth will enable us to live a deeper life in Christ knowing

that our sins are forgiven.

Circumcision means to be cut off from a sinful life. The real circumcision is of the heart. You can’t be perfect if that extra flesh is still there. You can’t walk and be perfect if an extra flesh is still dangling and causing a disturbance and drawing you back in your intimacy with God. The extra flesh harbors dirt, it keeps disease, and it must be cut off. For God to bless us we must walk before Him. There must be a big separation between the new skin and the extra flesh. “Let us set aside every weight that easily beset us and run with patience the race before us”. You can’t run with weights on you; Get it off so you can end well and no one takes your crowns.

To be candid, this exercise can’t be done alone and it’s not flesh friendly. Have you seen a newborn baby being circumcised? It’s got to be hurtful because the flesh doesn’t want to leave you, but it takes determination and intentional decision of who to follow whether the flesh or Christ. The flesh is of this world and it will be burnt one day.

Jeshurun was a man who refused to cut off his extra flesh. Deuteronomy 32:15 But Jeshurun

waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered [with fatness];

then he forsook God [which] made him and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation.

If you read to the end of Deuteronomy 32, you will see how the wrath of God was kindled upon them.

Meditation: God wants to make a covenant of holiness with you and me. Like He told Joshua in Gilgal to make a sharp knife to circumcise every Male, you’ve got to get a sharp knife now if God must do His work and walk in us. 1 Corinthians 7:19 Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God.
