Water of Life

Water of Life

John 4:10,13,14.

Can you think of the various things in life that could satisfy the souls of men? The human race has invented various elements for engagement and entertainment to soothe the curiosity of men. Numerous masterclasses give up-to-date information about how to be accomplished in all various aspects of life. But despite all of these, there’s still one key question that remains unanswered, at least not by the wisdom of men: What is the essence of life? The Greek philosopher, Aristotle said, “The essence of life is to serve others and do good”. This has some truth to it, but we have ample evidence of men in history who wrecked a lot of havoc with a biased intention to do good. Paul said in Romans 21:7 that there is an element in nature that seeks to corrupt even the best of human intention and turn it into evil. Haven’t you read of men who were so passionate about helping others, but ended up enslaving them and becoming a tyrant thereafter.

The conversation between Christ and the Samaritan woman in the text outlines how she started on the wrong foot about the estranged relationship between Jews and Samaritans. But Christ retorted with the response in John 4:10 (MSG) “If you knew the generosity of God and who I am, you would be asking me for a drink, and I would give you fresh, living water”. One thing stands out here: “The generosity of God” speaks on the willingness of God to continuously give living water (eternal life) to as many as desire it.

Eternal life is the panacea for the question of the true essence of life. It is simply knowing God and of His Christ- 1 John 5:11-13 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life, and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

God is a multi-dimensional, inexhaustive, inexplicable entity that governs the affairs of the entire cosmos and beyond- Job 38-41. This eternal life lies entirely in the quality (Rhema) rather than the quantity (logos) of our knowledge of God- 1 Corinthians 2:9,10,13,14. It begins at Calvary, the place of redemption and adoption- John 3:15,16. But it doesn’t end there- 1 Timothy 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. There’s an abiding personal fellowship of continuously knowing God more and more through an intentional study of the word of life (John 5:39) and in prayers (Jude 1:20,21). By the time we exchange our bodies in death, this same eternal life is what we continue in by living with God forever and ever- Mark 10:30; Matthew 25:46.
